Black History Month Spotlight: Tracie Thoms


Tracie Thoms' face is familiar to most. She has been playing roles large and small for years. Most recently, we've enjoyed her performance as Desiree Scoville in Apple TV's Truth Be Told series. So we thought this was a great time to highlight this talented Baltimore native.


Tracie Nicole Thoms is an Emmy-nominated American television, film, and stage actress and singer. Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, she graduated from the Baltimore School for the Arts in 1993. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Howard University in 1997 and attended the Juilliard School's Drama Division as a member of Group 30 (1997-2001).


Thoms is best known for her role as Mahandra McGinty in the television show "Wonderfalls." In 2005, she joined the cast of the CBS crime drama "Cold Case" as the homicide detective, Kat Miller. Thoms has also made guest appearances on "Law & Order" and "The Shield."

Thoms has appeared in several movies, including the film adaptation of the Broadway musical "Rent," in which she plays Joanne Jefferson, the lawyer, and lover of Maureen Johnson (played by Idina Menzel). She also appeared in the 2006 film version of "The Devil Wears Prada" as Lily.


Thoms has also had a notable Broadway career. She made her Broadway debut in Regina Taylor's "Drowning Crow." She has also appeared in several off-Broadway and regional productions, including "Up Against the Wind," "The Oedipus Plays," "A Raisin in the Sun," "Joe Turner's Come and Gone," "The Exonerated," and "The Antigone Project." In 2008, she joined the final cast of "Rent" and reprised the character of Joanne, which was later filmed and released as "Rent: Filmed Live on Broadway." Thoms reprised her role as Joanne in another production of "Rent," directed by Neil Patrick Harris, at the Hollywood Bowl in 2010.


Thoms' acting talent has been recognized by several awards, including an Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Actress In A Short Form Comedy Or Drama Series category for "Send Me: An Original Web Series," which aired on BET.com. Her impressive acting resume and ability to bring characters to life have made her a well-respected actress in the entertainment industry.


Traci Thoms is a multi-talented actress who has significantly impacted the entertainment industry. Her acting career spans stage, television, and film, and she has proven time and time again that she is a versatile and gifted performer. Thoms' acting career continues to flourish, inspiring and captivating audiences with her performances. She is a true gem in the entertainment world, and her legacy will continue to live on for years to come. We are proud to call her one of Baltimore's own.
